Spiti and Pangi Valley
Day 1 | From Delhi, we take the morning train to Amb and then 40 minutes to Garli/Pragpur. A nice hotel to rest from the travel strain. We'll pick you up from Delhi airport |
Day 2 | Today we head along the Green Himalaya, to Bir, India's paragliding hot spot. A beautiful leisurely drive to start this special journey along the rice fields and hills of the Kangra Valley. |
Day 3 | On small, still lightly trafficked roads, we pass through valleys and villages, first into the Kult Valley and then into the Tirthan Valley. Here we stay by the beautifully situated Tirthan River, in a Heritage Cottage, enchantingly nestled in an apple orchard. |
Day 4 | We drive on a spectacular narrow road, first reaching 3200 meters above the Jalori Pass, then along descending mountain slopes to Rampur and Sarahan. A highlight is the Bhimkali Temple, perched above the mountain landscape, with views of 6000- meter peaks at this time of year. |
Day 5 | Today we set off early, mostly driving on the former India Tibet Highway. With a magnificent view of Kinnar Kailash (6032 meters high). Along the Sutlej Gorge, we slowly leave the Hindu cultural landscape and enter the Tibetan-like world. Nako, a small traditional village now catering to tourism. |
Day 6 | Today, a short drive to the Tibetan village of Tabo. In Tabo, we find unique artworks from the late 9th century. The monastery complex was built by the famous Tibetan scholar Ringchen Zampo and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. |
Day 7 | We explore the Spiti Valley and (if possible) make detours into the side valleys. We reach Kaza in good time and can enjoy the afternoon in the hotel garden. |
Day 8 | Today, the monasteries of Spiti are the focus. A leisurely sightseeing program with monastery visits and village walks. Evening visit to the Highest Village in the World, Kibber. |
Day 9 | Continuing on gravel roads through the Spiti Valley, we encounter a rugged and impressive landscape near Chandertal. Overnight stay in a simple tent camp with beds by Chandertal Lake (4000 meters high, don't worry, we're well acclimatized by now). This day also serves as a buffer day. |
Day 10 | Today we must set off early, but ahead of us lies a beautiful day that couldn't be more varied. First, we head towards Kunzum Pass (4550 meters), then we enter the mountain world of Rohtang Pass, and finally through the semi-arid Lahaul Valley. Cozy hotel accommodation in Keylong. |
Day 11 | Today's journey takes us through dramatic landscapes into the next adventure. We make a stop at the traditional Triloknath Temple, and shortly after Udaipur, it becomes very exciting for off-road fans. This section is one of the most remote parts of the Indian Himalayas. |
Day 12 | Allegedly the most dangerous road in the world :) but now somewhat tamed. Definitely spectacular. For those who prefer, relaxation awaits at the guest house |
Day 13 | Always a huge highlight for everyone so far, the Sach Pass. Not necessarily in height, but in diversity and the dramatic scenery of the two mountain sides it connects, unmatched. |
Day 14 | A beautiful little Himalayan pass right on the first day of driving, what more could one want? We head into the beautiful Chamba Valley via the Jot Pass. |
Day 15 | A leisurely day for shopping and a visit to our home. Dharamshala is the Tibetan exile in India. On a bed and breakfast basis, thus the end of the trip will be celebrated appropriately. |
Day 16 | By car, we head to Amritsar in the morning. A leisurely day with a visit to the impressive Golden Temple in the evening hours. |
Day 17 | Transfer to the airport. A short domestic flight takes you directly to the international airport in Delhi. Return flight in the early evening/night. |
