The route passes quiet monasteries where prayer flags flutter in the mountain wind, fertile villages fed by glacial streams, and high mountain plateaus where the horizon stretches for kilometers beneath impossibly blue skies. A Landscape That Never Stands Still

One day you're winding through fertile valleys shaded by poplar trees and apricot orchards. The next you're crossing broad mountain deserts where almost nothing grows, surrounded by layered rock formations in shades of gold, crimson and charcoal.

The journey climbs over high passes before descending into hidden valleys, skirts the shimmering waters of Pangong Lake, explores the dramatic landscapes of the Nubra Valley and ventures into the remote Changthang Plateau. Here, the Trans-Himalayas reveal their wildest side, vast open plains, crystal-clear skies and an overwhelming sense of space that few places on Earth can match.

Wildlife has adapted to these harsh conditions too. Keen-eyed riders may spot Himalayan marmots darting between rocks, herds of blue sheep navigating impossible slopes, or the graceful Kiang, the Tibetan wild ass, roaming the high-altitude plains. Golden eagles soar overhead, while black-necked cranes return to parts of Changthang during the summer months, adding another layer of life to this seemingly barren landscape.

Reaching Umling La
